Welcome to Your New School Year!
No matter how you say it: Welcome! 5th Grade promises to be a fun year, and we look forward to seeing the students soon. A mailing was sent out recently, and it listed a few items students should bring to school, if possible. Many other items will be available here in class.
If you would like to receive messages/updates about this blog automatically, there is a "follow by email" option on the right-hand side of this page. Please add your email; you may receive an email afterwards asking you to "confirm" your request. Last year, families received updates between roughly 5:00 and 6:00pm.
If your student is getting excited and can't wait to practice math or vocabulary, here is the school's library/media center web page with many fun links: https://satec.follettdestiny.com/common/servlet/presenthomeform.do?l2m=Home&tm=Home&l2m=Home

Week of Memorial Day
🐣 We had a great time experiencing a hatch here in the classroom. In total, we had 21 chicks hatch, and unfortunately one was very weak and didn't make it.
🐤Mr. Murphy took 20 chicks to the UVM Extension Office in St. Albans on Friday afternoon -- where there were about 150 total little chickens running around. It was funny and very cute!
🐔The chicks will be part of 4-H programs this summer (to raise the chicks). For more information about UVM and the 4-H program:

The students did a great job being around and handling the chicks - they were very careful and really seemed to enjoy the addition to our room. Here are a few videos and a photo of our time:

SBAC Week! May 16-19
6th Grade is doing SBAC testing this week in the afternoons (Math on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Language Arts on Thursday and Friday).
There is no "take-home" homework either this week or next week during this SBAC testing window. The unofficial stuff to think about at home is getting good food and rest to help the students during their tests!
On the lighter side, here are two photos of recent student work about life in the Amazon Rainforest:

Below is a photo of our egg incubator -- eggs have been in there for two weeks, and they should begin to hatch next Tuesday (May 23). We will update the web page with photos once chicks are here. Also, we are hoping to set up a brief "live" video using Google and Youtube.

Week of April 11
Greetings! Today, we are posting many upcoming important dates; first, though, is a picture of 2 students with some of the 50+ origami butterflies we made recently. We are sending these butterflies to the Committee on Temporary Shelter in Burlington.
That organization is trying to break a world record for origami butterflies
in celebration of their 35th anniversary.
Important papers and dates:
1) last Friday, students received a newsletter with a "placement/feedback" paper for 7th grade; those papers do not have to be returned, although you are encouraged to provide the feedback (thank you in advance)
2) Wednesday, students received an informational page to take home about Pick-a-Time (conferences are coming up in early May)
3 Dates:
April 13: we will watch the school play
April 20: Jump-rope for Heart (at 1:30 that day)
April 21: 1/2 day for students
April 24-28: spring break for students
May 3-8: conferences
May 5: 1/2 day for students
May 16-19: 6th grade window for the real SBAC tests
