Some important dates are coming up:

Our first Jay Peak trip is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12.  We expect forms to go home later this week.

No matter how you say it: Welcome!  5th Grade promises to be a fun year, and we look forward to seeing the students soon.  A mailing was sent out recently, and it listed a few items students should bring to school, if possible.  Many other items will be available here in class.

If you would like to receive messages/updates about this blog automatically, there is a "follow by email" option on the right-hand side of this page.  Please add your email; you may receive an email afterwards asking you to "confirm" your request.  Last year, families received updates between roughly 5:00 and 6:00pm.

If your student is getting excited and can't wait to practice math or vocabulary, here is the school's library/media center web page with many fun links: https://satec.follettdestiny.com/common/servlet/presenthomeform.do?l2m=Home&tm=Home&l2m=Home

Week of Memorial Day

🐣 We had a great time experiencing a hatch here in the classroom.  In total, we had 21 chicks hatch, and unfortunately one was very weak and didn't make it.
🐤Mr. Murphy took 20 chicks to the UVM Extension Office in St. Albans on Friday afternoon -- where there were about 150 total little chickens running around.  It was funny and very cute!
🐔The chicks will be part of 4-H programs this summer (to raise the chicks).  For more information about UVM and the 4-H program:
http://www.uvm.edu/extension/youth/

The students did a great job being around and handling the chicks - they were very careful and really seemed to enjoy the addition to our room.  Here are a few videos and a photo of our time:

SBAC Week! May 16-19

6th Grade is doing SBAC testing this week in the afternoons (Math on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Language Arts on Thursday and Friday).

There is no "take-home" homework either this week or next week during this SBAC testing window.   The unofficial stuff to think about at home is getting good food and rest to help the students during their tests!

On the lighter side, here are two photos of recent student work about life in the Amazon Rainforest:

Green Iguana

Ocelot
Below is a photo of our egg incubator -- eggs have been in there for two weeks, and they should begin to hatch next Tuesday (May 23).  We will update the web page with photos once chicks are here.  Also, we are hoping to set up a brief "live" video using Google and Youtube.

That organization is trying to break a world record for origami butterflies
in celebration of their 35th anniversary.

Important papers and dates:
1) last Friday, students received a newsletter with a "placement/feedback" paper for 7th grade; those papers do not have to be returned, although you are encouraged to provide the feedback (thank you in advance)

2) Wednesday, students received an informational page to take home about Pick-a-Time (conferences are coming up in early May)

3 Dates:
April 13:      we will watch the school play

Have a great weekend!  Below is a poor video of a really good science project -- the student made a live model of a symbiotic relationship!  A beta fish and bamboo plant co-exist.

Week of March 20

Please note the following schedule change (related to the letters that were sent home last week):

John Halligan Presentation for students in grades 6th-8th

As you know, SATEC has implemented a comprehensive bullying prevention program. We are
committed to taking serious, proactive steps to curb a problem that is found in schools everywhere.
Mr. John Halligan will be presenting the story surrounding his son’s suicide to our 6th-8th graders on Tuesday, March 21st at 1:30pm (This date has been changed from the original letter that stated he would be here on 3/22).

Mr. Halligan will tell the story of Ryan and the factors that led up to his son’s suicide. The students will gain a perspective from inside a family of a child who is a victim of bullying and cyber-bullying. They will also gain awareness about the signs and risk of teenage suicide and how to best to help a friend. As part of Mr. Halligan’s presentation, students will have the chance to ask him questions. We encourage you to visit a website named for his son: www.RyansStory.org for more information.

Because of the sensitive nature of the topic, we wanted to inform you about it in advance. We
encourage you to ask your child about the presentation and discuss it together. If for any reason, you
would prefer that your child not attend this presentation, please send a written note to your child’s homeroom teacher by 8:30am on Tuesday, March 21st.

March 28 is our last trip date for jay Peak -- at this point, we are assuming that conditions will still allow us to go.

As an interesting bit of information, these are 3 links we have looked at briefly in class to follow animals using web cameras:

Our learning community is organizing a drive to send care packages to deployed members of the Vermont National Guard until February 14, 2017.

We appreciate any support you are able to provide, whether it means purchasing supplies, talking about the project with people you see, writing your own note of encouragement to a deployed person, or encouraging your child to take part in the efforts at school.  This week, some students began to make posters, and others are planning what to say when they share information with other classrooms at SATEC.

Below, please see a detailed list of items (taken from various online resources):

Detailed list of items:
  • Powdered drink mix. Your service member will appreciate anything that can be mixed with water. In cold months, send hot beverage mixes such as cocoa, instant coffee, tea bags, and creamer.
  • Meal enhancers. Anything that can be mixed with MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), such as ramen noodles, seasoned salt, individual packets of hot sauce, mustard, relish, and ketchup.
  • Quick protein. Energy bars, tuna fish, sardines, non-perishable beef jerky, or beef summer sausage. Make sure the meat is labeled USDA Beef.
  • Snacks. Look for small, hard containers of chips, pretzels, and nuts. These are easier to carry than large containers. Avoid bags, which may burst under high pressure.
  • Choose small, travel-size containers of personal care products, and avoid aerosol cans. To keep liquids from spilling, cover the opening of the container with plastic wrap, then recap before shipping.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton swabs, shaving lotion, disposable razors, shampoo, individually packaged tissues.
  • Personal care. Individually packaged baby wipes, eye drops, lip balm, lotion, aspirin or other pain reliever, feminine hygiene products for women.
  • Foot care. Moleskin, medicated foot powder, athlete's-foot ointment.2 l What to Send Someone Who is Deployed
  • Disposable hand warmers. Send these during the winter if your service member is in a cold climate.

  • Reading material. Paperback books, current magazines, comic books.
  • Word games and puzzles. Crossword puzzles, word searches, jigsaw puzzles.
  • Games. Foam footballs and basketballs, Frisbees, Hacky Sacks, playing cards, yo-yos.
  • Disposable camera.
  • Writing material. Notepaper, envelopes, pens, pencils, and even the Sunday comics from your local newspaper.

Board games, cards, and books are an awesome thing to put in a care package!  “We’re on our feet a lot when we’re deployed.  The best way for us to keep our feet dry, clean, and comfortable is with clean socks and foot powder.” Things like high-quality body wash, Vicks VapoRub, lip balm, and pain-relieving topical cream like IcyHot aren’t a necessity, but they can be a real luxury!  Lens cleaning cloths and small bottles of glass cleaner come in handy for our goggles.

Hot sauce is a great commodity to have around, and the convenience of Taco Bell sauce packets are great to have in the field. Flavoring packets that make water taste like lemon, strawberry or orange are awesome.
Beef jerky and sunflower seeds are great treats, but for a little bit of local flavor, try something that your loved one can’t get overseas, like a bottle of barbecue sauce from a local restaurant.
